Global slide may hit ethical market

Published: 01 December 2008 00:00

Organic, fair trade and ethical products may suffer a temporary sales drop because of the global financial crisis but they will bounce back, suggested keynote speakers at the International Trade Centre World Development Forum.

"The market is relatively robust. Given the current downturn, there will likely be a short-term hit, but there is much more potential than its current size," says UK Minister of State at the Department for International Development, Gareth Thomas.

The annual event, held in Montreux, Switzerland from 8-11 October is an influential international forum on trade and export issues for the developing world.

World Trade Organisation director general Pascal Lamy urged developing countries to present a unified voice to companies and governments in more developed economies. Meanwhile Alex Brigham, executive director of the Ethisphere Institute urged developed nations not to cut back on investments in developing countries during "this time of crisis".
